Amaya-Cruz v. Miami-Dade County

 

In partnership with the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, the Clinic filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of three transgender young people who were arrested while participating in Black Lives Matter and Black Trans Lives Matter protests and subjected to degrading treatment while jailed, including unnecessary strip searches and sexual harassment.

Claire v. Dep’t of Mgmt. Services

 

In partnership with the ACLU of Florida, Southern Legal Counsel, and the Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., the Clinic is representing three transgender Florida state employees who are being denied health insurance coverage for transgender-related care in a federal lawsuit against the state of Florida.

Hersom v. Crouch

 

In partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia, the Clinic filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of two transgender men who are challenging the constitutionality of West Virginia’s categorical refusal to change birth certificate gender markers for transgender people.

Lopez v. NYC Department of Homeless Services

 

In partnership with the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Clinic secured a landmark settlement on behalf of a transgender woman who experienced sexual and physical abuse, retaliation, and lack of reasonable disability accommodations in the New York City shelter system. The settlement mandates system-wide cultural competency training and the establishment of transgender-specific shelter units within the New York City homeless shelter system in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.
